Albano Morgado, S.A. has been able to adapt to the reality of the Country and the World.
More recently, the company is redefined at the level of the Warehouse of Finished, Finishing and Dyeing products, which provides for the replacement of more technologically advanced devices, not only in terms of processing quality, but also with environmental impacts, for example energy.
These are farms that were used to shelter the shepherds from the cold and rain.Heavy, with a very high density of yarns, thick and very tight, making them warm and waterproof. The burel, the samarra and the surrobeco have existed since the beginning of Company and have been adjusted to the current reality, namely with regard to colors and patterns.
However, its basic concept is exactly the same as it was 94 years ago. We have known how to produce it for a long time and today we make them like no other.
A company is therefore recognized for the quality of its traditional fabrics, with the flexibility to produce carded yarn from a metric number 3000 to 18000.
Albano Morgado, S.A. is a legacy that we receive and that we want to preserve, with rigor, with dedication and with vision. Undoubtedly, a legacy that we want to place in the hands of another generation.
We are convinced that this will happen, because we will not stop betting on the superior quality and differentiation of our fabrics. Bets on this, which always has in mind the needs of our customers, which are our reason for being, with respect for rigor and honesty.
People are the soul and raison d'être of the Company, which assumes its social responsibility and is committed to the future.Future that is made by walking by your side...
- Albano Jose Morgado Rodrigues
Thus began a new cycle. Marked by a strong investment in facilities, namely social facilities, equipment and new production options. We thus bet on the relationship with all employees and customers, and on the quality of the fabric, which allowed us to relaunch the company, overcoming the times of the strong crisis, between 2008 and 2015.
By considerably increasing turnover, we have cemented our internationalization, selling significantly to the foreign market and to increasingly sophisticated and demanding customers.
In carded yarns we use essentially thicker wool, many of national origin, thus contributing to the preservation of the exploitation and marketing of Portuguese wool.
However, in 2003, the Company was transformed into a public limited company, becoming Albano Morgado, S.A.; but the entire capital continued to belong to the family, which still remains today.
When our grandfather died, in 1976, he was still the majority owner of the company's capital and remained appointed manager, although the most effective management was ensured by his son Aquiles Morgado and his son Isaltino Rodrigues. A situation that remained for about thirty years, a period in which the consolidation of the business continued consistently.
Until the 1980s, everything the Company produced was marketed in Portugal. The traditional customers were the fabric stores, which then sold them to those who made clothes, especially the seamstresses and dressmakers.
After April 25, 1974, times were troubled, largely because of the union pressure that affected the textile sector.
The Company was then quite affected but, after some less good years, stability and growth returned, largely as a result of the team spirit and dedication of its administration, as well as the improvement of people's living conditions, which saw their purchasing power and ability to consume increased.
On the other hand, the Company - despite the construction carried out in the meantime - worked until 1970 in three different geographical points, which was not functional.
That is why that same year, with the support of his son Aquiles Morgado and his son Isaltino Rodrigues, our grandfather decided to move forward with a new and ambitious construction and acquisition of new equipment, which allowed to concentrate all production.
From 1970 to 1972 it was a time of great investment, a bold step that contributed a lot to the national projection of the Company.
The company, which started with weaving, had since 1964 a license for dyeing and finishing and, with the acquisition in 1970 of another industrial company in Loriga, became the holder of a license for carding and weaving.
He was thus able to gather the qualification for the various stages of production of carded wool fabric, from carding - opening and unraveling the wool fibers to allow the yarn to be manufactured - and braiding, through warping and weaving, to dyeing and finishing. Finally, the Company went vertical, bringing together the various stages of production of the carded fabric, made from the acquisition of washed wool.
And as the Company ceased to be dependent on third parties, now bringing together in itself all the production stages, it began to have total control of its manufacture and to be able to guarantee quality, variety and a better service to its customers.
In 1958, our grandfather formed a company with the four children: Ema da Conceição Almeida Antunes; Abílio de Almeida Morgado; Élia da Conceição Almeida Antunes Rodrigues (represented by her husband Isautino Rodrigues); Aquiles de Almeida Morgado.
It was Albano Antunes Morgado, Lda., a company by shares.
“Where I lost my coat is where I have to find it”
Our grandfather, who had a spirit of adventure and risk, was very persistent. Not everything was easy and there were nightmares. In the 1930s it formed a partnership with two other people. It didn't go well. He went out and restarted everything, this time alone. Initially it was unsuccessful. But he persisted, without changing his activity. He always said about learning from mistakes: “Where I lost my coat is where I have to find it.”
There were many difficulties to overcome
Starting any activity is always difficult. And it was especially so in the time of the so-called “industrial conditioning”. It was a time when freedom of entrepreneurship and competition were legally very difficult for those who wanted to create new industries, as there were limits to the number of companies and machines. The period from 1927 to 1958 was slow growing, although consolidated. It was at this stage that our grandfather built, next to the family house that, in the meantime, he erected in Sarzedas de São Pedro, a pavilion where he already had some mechanical tiles and some finishing machines; all in the same space. We maintained this pavilion, which is today the oldest factory space of the Company.
The years were long. Information was slow and scarce. And fashion was something that was not given much importance. This Lanifícios Company was born at a time when time was slowing down. He was born in 1927, by the hands of Albano Antunes Morgado.
It all started with two wooden floors
Truly, the first factory, where everything started with two layers of wood, was the house of our maternal great-grandfather, in Sarzedas de São Pedro, Castanheira de Pera.Meanwhile, our grandfather Albano, who already worked in the linen trade, came from Vila Facaia, in Pedrógão Grande, to love and marry with our grandmother Celeste; and she stayed in Sarzedas de São Pedro.
